Does my car or truck key have a chip in it?Most vehicles over the year 2000 have transponder chips in them. These "chipped" keys will need to be programmed to the vehicle in order for it to be able to start the engine. The type of transponder chip your vehicle requires depends on the year, make, and model of vehicle. Although you may be surprised to find some newer model vehicles actually do not require chipped keys.

Why did my remote/key stop working?First and most common reason for a key to stop working is the battery on the inside has gone dead. Changing the battery is simple and often can be done yourself at a low cost. Batteries for keys are sold at a wide variety of stores like auto parts, big box stores, hardware, etc. If you have a push-start vehicle you can bypass the proximity function to start your vehicle by holding your key directly on to the start button and push it in. Other push start vehicles may have a key-slot to put your fob into and then start the vehicle like normal. Reference your owners manual to see which method your vehicle requires. Other than the battery being dead, your key may be damaged and require a repair to the circuit board. Most times if the damage isn't severe your transponder chip should still work to start and run the vehicle, but the entry remote buttons may not be working. Seek help from a trusted locksmith to see if they can simply repair the key or replace your key for you. If your key fails to start the vehicle you may have damage to the transponder chip itself. The only real way to solve this problem is to replace your key with a new one as the transponder chips inside are fragile and once broken are not fixable. Always save your damaged key for the locksmith! They can often use this key as reference to make your new key and potentially save on the price.

What are "laser cut" or high security side-winder keys? These are a type of key that refers to the way the key blade itself is cut. These keys look different from your traditional double side cut type keys, often having the cuts in the center of the key blade as opposed to the side edges. These keys and locks are much safer and more durable than a traditional type lock. The keys are much harder to duplicate and the locks are much harder to pick. The key blade is cut using specific machines designed to cut these type of key blades.

Why is Automotive Locksmith service so costly? The truth is Locksmith related service is a trained skill perfected and mastered over time. You are paying for the knowledge, experience, and quality of work from a trained professional. In addition to that the parts alone can make up a lot of the cost as many key types can vary greatly depending on your vehicle and the type of key you need. When it comes to lockouts it is highly recommended to seek professional locksmith service to gain entry. Vehicles are not designed to be broken into, and with that comes extremely high risk of the vehicle becoming damaged if an untrained person attempts to gain entry without the key. Repairing these damages can cost many times more than the amount you would have paid a qualified locksmith to do. Although you may think the cost of locksmith service can be expensive, there are still some companies that over-charge. Do your due diligence and call around and get multiple quotes from different companies. This specific industry tends to attract many new companies trying to gouge customers by taking advantage of their lack of knowledge about how much the service should cost. It is in your wallets best interest to call around and get a fair price from a reputable locksmith.

I have my key but my battery is dead, how can I unlock my vehicle? Many people may be unaware of a hidden emergency key on the inside of their key fob. Most key fob style keys have a metal key blade hidden inside of them. The metal emergency key is usually attached to the part where you would secure the key ring to. If you look on your fob there should be a spring loaded button that you can push in or pull to the side while pulling the metal blade key out. Once removed you can turn the key in the driver's side key hole and unlock the vehicle that way. This key is used to unlock your vehicle in the event that your vehicle's battery or the key's battery is dead, instead of paying to have someone unlock the vehicle. Some newer model vehicles look as if there is no key hole anywhere on the vehicle. There actually is! Try looking on the drivers door where there should typically have a key hole and look under the handle you'll notice there is a small slot on the bottom of the plastic cover. You can remove your metal key blade from your key fob, insert the blade into that slot, and remove the plastic cover exposing the door lock and key hole used to unlock the vehicle. Be careful removing this plastic cover as it is fragile and with too much force can easily be broken.

Why should I call a locksmith if i can buy the lockout tools myself? If you've ever heard the expression "not as easy as it looks" you'll quickly understand why you should always call a professionally trained locksmith to provide your lockout service. While watching someone unlock a vehicle it may seem easy because they did it so quickly and with such seemingly simple tools. The fact is they have a lot of experience and have been unlocking countless vehicles to gain that experience. Even with the correct tools, in the hands of an untrained person can and likely will result in massive cosmetic and mechanical damage to your vehicle. Also, to be frank, almost anyone can technically unlock a vehicle by smashing a window or prying the door wide open, but the end result is irreparable damage. Even a highly trained technician has to take extreme care and caution to avoid minor damages when opening a vehicle correctly. This reason alone is enough to only rely on professionally trained locksmiths to provide this skill for you and avoid any further cost for repairs.
